The Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) conference, held April 15–16, 2026, in Münster, brought together leading global companies from the automotive, energy, and technology sectors to discuss the future of grid-connected mobility.

Given the rapid global proliferation of electric vehicles, their integration into energy systems presents unprecedented opportunities for OEMs, utilities, energy providers, and technology innovators. The event provided a comprehensive overview of the V2G ecosystem: It covered the latest developments regarding markets and revenue, regulatory frameworks, customer perspectives, and interoperability challenges, while also showcasing international best practices and pilot programs.

This conference was aimed at the entire V2G ecosystem. It appealed to automakers seeking to future-proof their products, energy suppliers looking for new solutions to enhance grid flexibility, grid operators striving for distributed flexibility, and regulatory authorities shaping the rules for the convergence of energy and transportation in the future. It was equally relevant for market analysts, technology providers, and investors seeking to identify growth opportunities in the V2G value chain. International stakeholders from Europe and beyond found a platform here to exchange knowledge, coordinate on interoperability, and better understand customer requirements. Whether they represented the supply side, the demand side, or policymakers, the event offered actionable insights on how to transform the potential of V2G into sustainable market revenue.

Six key areas along the value chain:

Real-world projects

The conference placed great emphasis on the practical implementation of ideas, which is why the “Practical Projects” session focused on projects that had already been carried out. During the session, stakeholders from all areas of the value chain shared their experiences from field tests, practical projects, and the commercial operation of bidirectional vehicles.

Charging infrastructure

The charging infrastructure is undergoing dynamic and rapid development cycles, and modern charging points have long been capable of much more than simply supplying electricity. Charging infrastructure serves as the central communication interface between vehicles on one side and home energy management systems, grid operators, aggregators, etc., on the other. Especially in the bidirectional sector, DC connections are often used, which is why charging points must provide grid-approved inverters. In this session, manufacturers and operators of charging infrastructure, as well as other stakeholders from the charging infrastructure ecosystem, shared their insights.

Vehicles

With bidirectional charging, the vehicle transforms from a mere consumer into an active participant in the electricity market of the future. To successfully implement new applications and business models, vehicle manufacturers face new challenges. Vehicle batteries must enable more cycles in an energy-efficient manner, and new communication interfaces must be implemented securely—without compromising the vehicle’s primary purpose: reliably transporting people and goods. In this session, automotive companies shared their experiences and current ambitions in this area.

System Integration

With vehicle owners, aggregators, energy companies, backend operators, vehicle manufacturers, grid operators, and many others, there is a wide variety of stakeholders in the field of bidirectional charging. In this session, participants explored concepts for integrating all stakeholders into a shared value chain in order to achieve successful system integration.

Grids and data

The question of whether electric mobility will strain or overload the power grids is a major concern for many citizens. The reason is that expanding the power grid often takes years or even decades and sometimes fails due to resistance from local communities. Electric mobility, on the other hand, is gaining traction within just a few years and is thus developing much more rapidly. During the conference, our speakers demonstrated how electric mobility can stabilize the grids rather than overload them.

Smart and flexible tariffs

The integration of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies makes it possible to use electric vehicles (EVs) not only as a means of transportation but also as mobile energy storage units. Smart and dynamic rates play a key role in efficiently managing energy flows between vehicles and the power grid. Such rates already adjust on a daily basis or in real time to electricity market prices and, in some cases, to grid conditions. This allows electric vehicle users to benefit from attractive prices when they feed energy into the grid or charge at off-peak times. At the same time, these tariffs promote grid stability, reduce peak loads, and enable the optimized integration of renewable energy into the energy system. During the conference, it became clear that this is an important step toward sustainable and economical mobility in the future.

A Look Back 2026

Interactive Exchange Between Business and Academia

Each program session concluded with a period set aside for personal questions and discussion with the speakers and participants. The speakers were available to talk with guests throughout the conference.
The accompanying public poster session facilitated the direct exchange of scientific content, research findings, and ideas. The researchers presented their posters on-site and answered questions from visitors. By integrating the conference into the international Battery Power Conference, a broad spectrum of opportunities for networking and in-depth exchange was also provided.

Yesterday I spoke at the two-day HashtagVehicle2Grid conference in Aachen about the spread of smart tariffs and services across Europe. These tariffs and services enable consumers to charge their EVs smartly, contributing to power system reliability, sustainability, and lower costs for all energy system users.
In the same session, Niklas Hemberger of The Mobility House, Michael P. Evans of Octopus Energy and Daniel Mata of Tibber showed how they unlock the value of different markets for their users today, and at scale. There are now 480 of these possibilities throughout Europe, mainly at home, but public smart charging is also starting to grow.

We had the pleasure of attending the HashtagVehicle2Grid conference in Aachen this week! 🚗⚡️

Together with my colleague Taeyoung Kim, we presented our poster “Towards Smart and Grid-Integrated E-Mobility Solutions”, showcasing our work and upcoming demos within the EU H2020 projects FLOW Project and BeFlexible EU. It was great to share what we’ve been working on and to connect with so many people who are equally passionate about smart charging and grid integration.
